Since I can remember, my beauty routine has consisted of the same essential elements: some kind of base (started with compact power and graduated to a liquid foundation over the past decade), heavy eyeliner on the bottom waterline, mascara, some kind of blush or bronzer and a lipstick. I played a lot with colour, trying mattes, shimmers, bolds, nudes, corals, pinks, reds, purples, and everything in between – but the way I applied my makeup remained the same for years.
I don’t know what triggered it, but finally this winter season, I decided to shake things up a bit. In an attempt to brighten the dullness under my eyes and to give myself a more fresh, vibrant look, I eliminated dark and heavy waterline eyeliner that used to be a staple of mine. Eliminated. That was a huge step for me, like, massive. I wanted to see if it would help alleviate the darkness under my eyes and if it would do anything to brighten my look. I also started to apply a highlighter to my cheekbones under my blush or bronzer to see how it would change the wear-time of my makeup.
Low and behold, I’ve found myself addicted to a new routine with new items in my stash. Here are 5 products I am currently loving:
1 Caryl Baker Perfect 10 BB Cream. I wore this for a few days last month to try it out for review purposes and ended up falling in love with it. The Caryl Baker promise is that it primes, tints, nourishes, evens out skin tone, hydrates and gives luminosity, amongst other things. While it doesn’t provide as much coverage as I would normally get from a foundation, it definitely does wonders to evening out my skin tone and providing a lightweight base that holds my makeup all day. I simply apply a small amount to my face with my fingers every morning as I start my beauty routine.
2. Marcelle Velvety Eyeshadow Primer. I typically have oily eye lids, which makes it difficult for me to wear any kind of liner or shadow without it wiping off or creasing by mid-day. I used to only wear primer under eyeshadow, but tested it out under a liquid liner and was so impressed with the lasting power, that Marcelle’s primer has quickly become an essential of mine. It’s got a velvety sheer finish that allows you to wear it alone but still have the effect of a done up eye. It holds my liner all day, without a smear or smudge in sight. I also use my fingers to apply a very small amount of product to both eye lids every morning.
3. Arbonne Sheer Glow Highlighter. While I knew all the benefits, I never used a highlighter in my daily routine. I first started using this as a primer for my bronzer but slowly began seeing how luminous and bright my face looked every time I used it. I apply two small drops to my cheek bones and again, use my fingers to smear the product into my skin. The result is literally a sheer glow that reflects light, adding a brightness and appeal that I was missing before.
4. Marcelle Double Precision Liquid Eyeliner Pen. I’ve never been one for liquid liners, because I was so waterline-focused in the past. I found liquids ran quickly and didn’t provide the drama I was looking for with a pencil. I decided to give this product a try and with the combination of the Velvety Eyeshadow Primer, I began to see why some women swear by liquid liner. It’s deep, it glides on perfectly, and you get a smooth line across the entire upper lid. I use the thick side for my first application and the thinner side to fill in areas of missed and to create the winged line (when I’m in that kind of mood).
5. Smashbox Green Room Bronzer. It’s been a while since this product has been available for sale, but I found it sitting in my makeup drawer a little while ago and thought I’d give it a try. I’d be okay with any bronzer, really. Some people think bronzer should only be used in the summer, but with my skin tone, I’d rather use it in the winter to gain the warmth in my skin tone that I feel fades as the winter months take over.
With these five new products that I’ve incorporated into my daily routine, I find my look is fresher and takes less time to apply. The makeup I put on in the morning lasts throughout the day, leaving me with less time needed to touch-up or re-apply when I transition from day to night beauty. I’m really enjoying the cleaner look and have noticed the darkness under my eyes had started to brighten. I might hold on to this routine for a little while longer!
What do you do to keep your look fresh and radiant?
I’d love to hear from you!
